CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Kevin Tatur says he has been in law enforcement for 25 years. Twelve of those years he has served with the Huntersville Police Department.

He made Huntersville his home with his wife and two kids. But back in October, he felt his world come crashing down.

"I felt like I got hit by a train or a truck," Huntersville Police Lt. Kevin Tatur said. "It just totally stopped my life."

Tatur had a colonoscopy and was told he had stage 2 rectal cancer. It was tough news for his whole family.

"I was just in shock and then I started to cry because it was a lot of information they had given me at once," Tatur's wife, Laura Tatur, said.

Since then, Tatur has gone through chemotherapy and radiation. He has an upcoming surgery to remove the tumor scheduled in March.

"We are here to support his family, so whatever they need from us we are here to back them up," Huntersville Police Lt. Bryan Latza said.

A golf tournament is scheduled April 13 at Skybrook Golf Club to help cover his medical bills. After payment to the facility, all the proceeds will go to the Tatur family.

"With any insurance, it’s a new year, you start over," Laura Tatur said. "So you have to meet all the deductibles and then the 20 percent so it’s just a lot and we still paying bills for the colonoscopy and all of that stuff."

Money aside, Laura Tatur says she is just happy they caught the cancer early and says it’s all because he had a colonoscopy.

"If he had waited, two more years until he was 50, he wouldn’t be sitting here right now," Laura Tatur said.
