STATESVILLE, N.C.— People in Statesville have to find a new place to go to the movies.

The city's only theater closed last week.

Marquee Cinemas says it wasn't able to come to an agreement on a new lease with the property managers. It also says the theater wasn't profitable.

Nationally, the number of movie theaters dropped around four percent from 2005 to 2018 and around 24 percent since 1995, according to Statista.

Competition from Netflix is often cited as reason for theater closures.

Folger Drive Properties, which owns the property, says the theater told them it was a factor in its closing but Marquee says it wasn’t the reason.

“You can stay at home and Redbox for a few dollars or Netflix,” says Mandy Bruce who used to go to Marquee Cinemas. “You go here and its 30 dollars just to get in, get a popcorn, and a drink.”

The good news for theaters is last year's box office sales were the third highest-grossing in history.
