GREENSBORO, N.C. — The PGA's Wyndham Championship is just a few weeks away, and the tournament is struggling to recruit volunteers.

What You Need To Know

Wyndham Championship is struggling to find volunteers this year

They need at least 200 more volunteers

Coordinators believe it's due to the pandemic and the dates of the tournament

Frank Hughes has been playing golf for over 30 years and has been volunteering at the championship at Sedgefield Country Club for 14 years.

"Being a volunteer out here, you know you're in the action, it's so much fun," Hughes emphasized.

He's the standard bearer chairman, so he walks with each group carrying the sign that shows the scores for the golfers.

During the championship week, Hughes is on this golf course from 5 a.m. until about 9 p.m.

"It's definitely like a second home for about a week," Hughes said.

Hughes says it's the atmosphere and the people he volunteers with that make this week so special, and he gets to recruit volunteers from all over the country.

"Meeting all the new volunteers and all the past volunteers it's like a reunion from year to year and we become a big family, so it's really just an awesome time," Hughes explained.

They have about 1,200 volunteers for this year's tournament, but he says they will need at least 1,500 people.

He believes the low turnout may be due to the pandemic and the date of the championship, which also lines up with school starting up again.

"It's sad, I mean look at how beautiful this place is and what it does for the community. We need volunteers. Come on out here and volunteer," Hughes emphasized.

Each volunteer at the Wyndham Championship gets a ticket to the event along with four guest tickets, and you can sign up to volunteer on their website
