RALEIGH, N.C. — Community members are giving out over 200 free backpacks filled with supplies, free haircuts and free hair styles to send kids off to school.

The event will be Saturday, August 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1950 New Bern Avenue in Raleigh at Southeast Church.

The groups Queens Collectively and PrettyFatGrlGang are making this happen with a sponsorship by the Kappa Charitable Trust Fund.

One of the organizers, Shay Love, says she wants to help parents out after a tough year.

"We don't want to see kids being bullied for things that are out of their control," said Love, with Queens Collectively. "Parents have been out of work due to COVID. Parents may not be able to provide certain things for them, so we wanted to [have] one less thing that they have to be focused on so that we can help them to make their school year even more better."

The backpacks are for kids ranging from elementary to high school. The organizations plan to do another drive in December, when teachers and students usually need a restock.
