CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte nonprofit is finding sweet ways to help people with disabilities learn hands-on skills that can transfer to other areas of the workforce.

Cake decorator and former special education teacher Renee Ratcliffe started Cakeable Charlotte last year.

With the help of two employees and four apprentices, the group bakes goods each week. The activity teaches the staff life skills, and Ratcliffe hopes they will help other companies see how capable their staff really is.

“If there are other businesses where people may be hesitant or fearful of hiring someone with a disability, that could be a missed opportunity for them,” Ratcliffe said.  “We want to encourage them and serve as an example of another business that has stepped into that opportunity and just benefitted everybody — the students, us, the customers. It’s been a win-win.”
