PILOT MOUNTAIN, N.C. — Firefighters are working to put out a fire on Pilot Mountain that has already burned hundreds of acres, and that grew overnight.

According to the Pilot Knob Fire Department, the fire began Saturday night, but firefighters don’t know how it started.

North Carolina Forestry Service spokeswoman Christie Adams says the fire that covers about 300 acres Monday morning grew by about 75 acres overnight. Adams says a team is expected to arrive Monday to take over management of the fire.

There are about 30 to 40 people involved in the fight against it.

The North Carolina State Parks and Recreation Department said the park is closed and likely will be all week. State officials are asking people to stay away from the area and to refrain from using drones because they may interfere with firefighting aircraft.

The park is located northwest of Winston-Salem and is known for its iconic knob that rises about 1,500 feet above the surrounding terrain.

The park campground at Pilot Mountain was evacuated, and officials say no civilians or homes are in direct danger.

N.C. Forestry Service officials say the fire isn't contained, but it's "well within the containment lines,” and no structures are threatened.

Multiple agencies responded to the fire, including the state’s forestry service.

“Approx. 50 men and women dropped what they were doing and came to help,” the Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department posted on Facebook Sunday. “This is an ever changing fire and we will try to keep the community as updated as possible.”

Any wind shifts may cause residents in the Winston-Salem area to smell smoke from the fire. Anyone sensitive to poor air quality may want to check the latest conditions for possible effects over the next day or so.
