BURNSVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The N.C. State Highway Patrol says one of its troopers was shot and wounded while assisting other law enforcement officers with a car chase. The suspect involved is dead, Yancey County deputies say.

According to a preliminary investigation, Trooper Kevin E. Glenn was shot as he prepared to deploy a tire deflation device on Tuesday near the area of US 19 and Newdale Church Rd. in Yancey County.

Glenn was called to the area to assist a Mitchell County deputy involved in a vehicle chase, where the person had fired shots at the officer, deputies say. The vehicle then crashed near the intersection to Boxwood Road and US Highway 19E.

The Yancey County Sheriff's Office posted the "suspect shot at officers multiple times [and] Yancey County Deputies returned fire." The suspect was pronounced dead at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital.

A news release says Glenn, a nine-year veteran assigned to Mitchell County, was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore posted Tuesday evening that his prayers are with Glenn. "Thank you Trooper Glenn and all men and women of the [North Carolina Highway Patrol] for serving and protecting us," Moore tweeted.
