CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Davis Love III was named captain for the United States team that will try to retain the Presidents Cup in 2022. The matches will be contested at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte in September of that year.

The Presidents Cup matches began in 1994, matching a team of golfers from the United States against a team comprised of international players from all parts of the world with the exception of European countries. The event was originally scheduled to be played in 2021, but was moved back a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Love made six appearances as a player in Presidents Cup play, winning with the American squad four times, and tying once.  Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2017, Love was also a part of eight Ryder Cup teams as either a player or captain.  His teams won that event three times.

The 56-year-old was born in Charlotte and attended the University of North Carolina before turning pro in 1985.  Love has 37 professional wins, with one major championship in his career. He also won the 1997 PGA Championship, but he always felt a special connection with team golf on the international stage.

"We want to win.  We try too hard and get in our own way and lose sometimes, but we, as American golfers, we love being on these teams," Love said.  "These are our Olympics."

Love appeared as a guest on the Chevrolet Sports Night on Tuesday to discuss his role as captain, and looked ahead to leading the U.S. against the International team, captained by Trevor Immelmann.
