RALEIGH — It’s that time of year where we’re making plans to take that family vacation, or maybe send our kids off to summer camp. But there are some pesky bugs and insects that could really cause us and our kids harm. Spectrum News anchor Caroline Blair sat down with MinuteClinic Nurse Practitioner Hilary Karabin, for some tips.

Karabin says when we spend any amount of time outdoors, while fun, there are still a number of risks especially with mother nature that can cause major health concerns. She says prevention is key and offers the following tips on how to keep our kids healthy while away at camp.

Covering up our bodies is crucial in preventing mosquito and tick bites, and can even help keep our skin protected from the harsh sun rays. She urges parents to pack their campers long sleeves, long pants and socks, specifically permethrin-treated clothing and tents for  added protection.

Karabin also urges campers to wear insect repellent with Deet, and spray it around the ankle and lower legs. She also says it’s important to pack SPF lip balm, a wide brimmed hat, a good water bottle and sturdy hiking boots. She says it’s important to have your kids shots up to date, and she urges parents to plan ahead and make sure you review your child’s medical history and make sure you understand what kind of medical staff will be on site.
