GREENSBORO -- Monday marked the first day hundreds of Guilford County school students relocated to new buildings.

Reedy Fork Elementary welcomed 300 students from Hampton Elementary, that was severely damaged during last week’s tornado.

Teachers, staff, and other members of the community greeted them with cheers and hugs Monday morning.

School officials say the transition will be challenging, but it’s a challenge they're ready to take on.

Denise Shroeder, the principal of Reedy Fork Elementary, said, “We are making most of our space so the work rooms have their smallest classes in them, so there’s three work rooms that students are in now.”

LaToy Kennedy, the principal of Hampton Elementary, said, “I said, ‘think of this as a new first day of school.’ You’ve got all new stuff, and you’re in a new place, but we’ll continue doing the things that we did at Hampton that made us unique.”

Students from Erwin Montessori are joining Alamance Elementary for the rest of the year, and kids from Peeler are going to Bluford Elementary.
