AUSTIN, TX -- Republicans from across the country are making their way to Austin where they will vote for Charlotte or Las Vegas as the host city for the 2020 Republican National Convention.

North Carolina Republican Party leaders say they're cautiously optimistic the Queen City will win the bid.

First the RNC site selection committee will meet and take a vote Wednesday which will be a closed session meeting. On Friday the entire Republican National Committee will take a vote.

The RNC's summer meeting comes after a very contentious city council meeting Monday night where more than 100 spoke out for and against bringing the convention to the city.

If Charlotte is selected as the host city, Dallas Woodhouse, executive director of NC GOP, says he's confident the party, city and host committee can balance bringing in economic impact and maintaining peaceful political debate.

"People will get a chance to voice their opinions on both sides. It'll be a great chance for people to have a respect for political debate and we'll make sure that we approach it that way," Woodhouse said.

Members of the county's Republican party will be in Austin this week along Mayor Vi Lyles and four members of city council.
