JACKSONVILLE, N.C. – A 16-year-old boy was injured after being hit by a school bus Friday morning.

Jacksonville police say it happened just after 6:30 a.m. in the 1800 block of Gum Branch Road near Sandy Drive.

The teen, who was a student at Jacksonville High School, was taken to the U.S. Naval Medical Center aboard Camp Lejeune with serious injuries before being transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

One student who was there when it happened said the victim was skating when it happened.

A crisis team is on the school’s campus to support students and staff.

There's no word yet on the extent of the student’s injuries or how the accident happened.

The city is asking the Department of Transportation for a review.

Right now, a Corridor Safety Project request for Gum Branch Road is pending.

They're asking for the area to be reviewed for more safety options before the project is considered.
