A former Cornell student was ordered held without bail pending a hearing after an unassembled AR-15 rifle, high-capacity magazines, a bulletproof vest, a homemade silencer, a gas mask and items used to make destructive devices were all found inside his college apartment in Ithaca.

Maximilien Reynolds, 20, was arraigned in federal court on charges of possession of a destructive device and a silencer, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, and also stands accused of having another person buy a gun for him to circumvent the law.

Acting on a tip, police launched an investigation on March 7 into suspicious activity at an apartment on Dryden Road. The cache of weapons law enforcement officers found inside "left police investigators stunned," according to the Ithaca Police Department. Also found were supplies to treat medical trauma as well as food rations.

According to court papers, Reynolds was previously detained by police in Ithaca under the state mental hygiene law in 2016.
