SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Charlie Tan, the man previously accused of killing his father in their Pittsford home back in February of 2015 pleaded guilty on Friday to receiving a firearm with intent to commit an offense and two counts of making false statements during the purchase of the firearm. His trial was expected to begin next week.

Tan entered the plea in a court room full of his friends and supporters.

According to court paperwork, Tan asked his friend Whitney Knickerbocker to buy a shotgun at a Walmart in Cortland on February 5th 2015 and later that night used the gun to shoot his father three times with hollow point bullets, with the third shot to the face being fatal.

On Friday, defense attorneys stated that they disagreed with some of the points laid out in the timeline.

The sides agreed to a deal under the stipulation that an admission to the murder would not be considered as part of the plea.

Tan was charged with second degree murder for his father's death, but Judge James Piampiano dismissed the charges in October of 2015 citing a lack of evidence after a jury failed to reach a verdict. Because of that ruling, the District Attorney's Office could not prosecute Tan or retry that case.

District Attorney Sandra Doorley released a statement following Tan's plea:

"With this plea in Federal Court, there is finally justice for Jim Tan. We certainly believed that our proof strongly supported Tan’s role in the homicide of his father. Today’s plea demonstrates that involvement. Again, justice for Jim Tan!”

Charlie Tan is facing up to 25 years in prison. Sentencing has been scheduled for October 18.
