A unique program will help Broome County streamline court proceedings during off hours.

When a suspect needs to be arraigned between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., or any time on the weekend, it will now happen right at the Broome County Jail. Public defenders and judges will be on call to head to the jail when needed.

Broome County is the first county in the state to implement the program.

"Broome County is so big, and when you're trying to get a public defenders' office to go to all these various places, it just makes sense to have it all in one place, get it done and then you move on," said Sixth Judicial District Administrative Judge Molly Reynolds-Fitzgerald.

Members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office say it’s also much safer for deputies. In the past, they’d often be forced to stay with the defendant until a judge could be contacted.

The Broome County Legislature approved the new program unanimously in August.
