DRYDEN, N.Y. -- Nearly 70 people in the town of Dryden could soon be left without a job.

Mettler-Toledo LLC is set to relocate its facility to Tampa, Fla., in the next couple of years.

Town Supervisor Jason Leifer says the decision all came down to tax breaks. He says the state of Florida offered the company a number of incentives that ultimately led it to its decision to move.

The decision to move the company south was made official in the summer of 2016. Leifer says the town and county were not informed of the move until they read an article online. With it comes the potential for 69 layoffs.

But Leifer says the company has made a commitment to bring some of their current employees to Florida, if they're willing to move.

"When you have a state like Florida that's willing to poach companies by giving massive tax breaks in exchange for jobs that might never materialize, it's hard to compete against that," Leifer said.

Spectrum News reached out to the company, but has yet to get a response. The facility will officially shut down July 1, 2018.
