Today is World AIDS Day.

It's a chance to not only raise awareness of the disease, but also to look at the efforts to fight it.

Some new statistics show progress is being made in New York State.

The governor's office says in 2016, there were 2,881 new infections in New York.

That's down from more than 3,000 in 2015.

"Young people between 20 and 24 years old, we've seen a significant decrease," said Alphonso David counsel to Governor Andrew Cuomo. "20 percent. 20 percent of new infections. So we've seen a decrease for young people who now understand how to have safe sex, to protect themselves, educate themselves about the process."

The state and city have pledged to end the epidemic by 2020.
