COHOES, N.Y. -- The city of Cohoes continues to pick up the pieces, two days after disaster struck Remsen St.

An inferno took down three buildings and damaged nearly 30 others.

It happened on Thursday, when 51-year-old John Gomes tried burning metal in a barrel at his home.

The heavy winds though, had other ideas, and the fire soon spread all through Remsen St.

Gomes was arrested but posted bail on Friday.

This morning, Spectrum News sat down with Cohoes Fire Chief Joseph Fahd.

He says Thursday was as devastating as it looked.

“To stand there and watch the fire jump from roof to roof on us as were trying to catch it was probably the worst day of my career. This is a community where everyone works together. My guys did a super job chasing it, and battling the main fire but when 32 buildings have some kind of damage, that’s a bad day," said Fahd.

A state of emergency is still in effect in Cohoes.

Chief Fahd says while the final numbers aren’t in, Thursday’s fire is a multi-million dollar loss for the city.
