OWEGO, N.Y. -- The last known living Pearl Harbor survivor in Tioga County is being honored for his service.

Bill Kennedy, 96, was an aircraft mechanic in Hawaii at the time of the attacks. Seventy-six years later, he shared his story to a crowd at the Owego VFW.

Kennedy recalled seeing three sets of bombers overhead that day, but luckily, he was just far enough away to survive.

Kennedy is currently in hospice care, but that wouldn’t keep him from attending the ceremony. He says it's important to continue sharing his story, so that no one will forget the events of that day.

More than 2,400 Americans were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
