BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- After weeks of debate, a proposed drug treatment center is now moving forward in Broome County.

The Broome County Legislature voted Wednesday night to accept a $2.7 million state grant. We're now getting a first-hand look on how that money will be spent.

Senator Fred Akshar tells Spectrum News that $1.2 million of the funding will go toward building costs and repairs at the Broome Developmental Center location. The other $1.5 million will be used directly for net deficit funding, covering any costs left behind from those who can’t afford services.

"It allows and it ensures that everyone will have access to treatment, regardless of ability to pay, and when we're dealing with this particular issue, I have long said people with commercial insurance shouldn't be the only people to get these services," Akshar said.

The center is slated to start offering services April 1.
