TOWN OF NEWFIELD, N.Y. — Two people are dead following a fire at a Tompkins County mobile home.

Crews were called to the Ward Heights Trailer Park in the town of Newfield around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The home was fully engulfed when they arrived.

The sheriff's office confirms two people were killed, but their names haven't been released yet.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the sheriff says fires like this are more common during cold snaps.

He says it's important to take some precautions to stay safe.

"You surely, in small structures like that, don't want any kind of open flame, in my mind, so you do have to be careful about space heaters and those types of things," said Ken Lansing, Tompkins County sheriff.

The sheriff is hopeful the fire's cause will be determined within a few days.
