DELHI, N.Y. -- A week after the Florida shooting, school safety remains a concern across the country.

In Delaware County, the sheriff is hoping to ease worries by adding resource officers to every school in the county.

A properly trained deputy sheriff would interact with students throughout the day in all 14 schools.

In Delaware County, there are more than 6,500 students and more than 700 faculty members.

While adding additional resource officers comes at a cost, the sheriff believes the community will be happy to make the investments needed to address this concern.

“With everything that’s going on in the world, if a school district, if my school district came to me and said can you pony up some extra money so that we can put an armed police officer to keep your child safe, the only question I would probably have would be can I have two,” said Craig DuMond, Delaware County Sheriff.

In the meantime, the sheriff is having deputies increase their presence at schools and check in with staff throughout the day.
