Lawmakers are looking to increase child safety when it comes to winter sports.

In January, the state Senate voted in favor of a bill to require skiers and snowboarders under the age of 14 to wear a helmet.

But, as the bill continues to sit in the Assembly, trauma experts at Upstate Medical University are calling for it to pass.

They said while it may not prevent every injury, it can reduce the severity of injury.

Experts said head injuries make up about 1/5 of injuries related to skiing or snowboarding.

"Twenty years ago not a lot of people were wearing bike helmets. Well if you look around now almost every young child has a helmet on when they're riding a bike, so it's just a progression in our injury prevention initiatives," said Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator Kim Nasby.

Experts also said it's critical to make sure you're wearing the right type of helmet.
