Spring is officially here, and that means construction season is just around the corner.

In Binghamton, crews are getting ready ramp up work on the Prospect Mountain project.

DOT officials met with local law enforcement officers Thursday to discuss the status of the project as well as plans to increase work zone safety.

State Police said they will be adding extra patrols and strictly enforcing speed limits.

"The work zones are inherently dangerous,” said State Police Captain Jeffrey Vanauken. “I mean you have narrow roadways, you have lane closures, you have awkward lane shifts, and all the while you have the DOT workers and contractors working in some instances within arm’s length of the cars, so we're there to get people to slow down and get people through the work zone without accidents."

Work zone speeding tickets can mean hefty fines and points on your license.

The project is set to be completed by 2020.
