Binghamton police say vacant homes are being targeted by copper thieves.

More than 25 vacant properties over the past several weeks have been broken into with several having “for sale” signs out front.

Police say copper piping inside the homes is being cut out for scrap metal.

On the south side, homes on Vestal Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue and Mill Street have been targeted.

Police say now they've seen trouble on the east and west sides.

If you see anything suspicious, police ask that you contact them.

"It's no bother to us. Any little clue can be a big break in an investigation and if something seems out of place to you and you know a property is for sale and something just doesn't seem right, go ahead and give us a call and we'll have a uniformed police officer over and take the call," said Lt. Alan Quinones.

Realtors are encouraged to add their properties to the city's vacant property list.
