DICKINSON, N.Y. --If you're a senior living in Broome County, you could see some positive changes coming in the next few years.

This summer, the county will be applying to join the AARP Network of Age Friendly communities.

Senior agencies say the designation would help bring community partners together to coordinate services for the elderly.

One step includes inspecting county homes to make sure seniors would be safe from falls.

Health officials also hope to make streets and sidewalks more accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

"We want to make sure that people are mobile, they have access to our transportation systems regardless of whether it's on wheels or they're walking. It's important people don't feel isolated," said Broome County Public Health Educator Mary McFadden.

Broome County leaders say by the end of the decade, 28% of county residents will be 60 and over.
