The lines between a Chemung County village and town are set to begin disappearing at the end of the year.

The Van Etten village board adopted a plan to dissolve after residents voted for dissolution back in December. But, the process could still be halted if a petition is signed by 25 percent of registered voters in the next 45 days.

If a referendum is passed, it would be put to a vote. A majority of village residents would then have to vote against it. But the mayor says that's not likely.

“A lot of time went into looking at all of the factors in all of the changes and all of the concerns and we just tried to make a valid stab at reality as to how best represent these people that are going to be represented by someone else now.,” said village of Van Etten Mayor Jake Briggs.

Until the village is officially dissolved, regular government operations will continue.
