NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Does Niagara Falls need another statue?

The city has received $500,000 in greenway funding from the state and, among other suggestions, is considering installing a statue of Frederick Douglass near police headquarters.

The Niagara Falls City Council isn’t sure that’s the best use of money.

“Who is willingly going to go visit a statue in front of the police station,” asked Councilor William Kennedy during a meeting Thursday night.

Donta Myles, a city resident, said “as a black man, that would be a slap in my face.”

If approved, the statute would cost an estimated $280,000. Some members of the city council were open to moving the statute to another location, but ultimately the statue was voted down.
