GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — Big changes are coming to Grand Island this week: Cashless tolling begins Friday.

So here's what drivers need to know:

  • No E-Z Pass, no problem. A photograph will be taken both of the front and rear license plates. A bill arrive in about 30 days at the address on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Will there be changes to the traffic pattern? Not right away. Drivers are asked to maintain that 20 mph speed limit as they pass through the closed booths, then proceed as normal over the bridge. The traffic pattern will change as the booths are removed.
  • It is estimated that going booth-free will save some 200 minutes of driving time for regular Grand Island commuters. The Thruway Authority also expects there were be fewer accidents and less exhaust emitted into the environment.

The biggest piece of advice the Thruway Authority has for drivers is to be aware. They suggest  to watch out for any drivers who might unaware of the change, causing some confusion.
