HAMBURG, N.Y. — The Hamburg fisherman pulled from Lake Erie Wednesday night has died.

Police say Robert Maccubbin, 50, was found in the water off Lake Shore Road near Hoaks Restaurant a little before 8 p.m.

Witnesses say Maccubbin was out on a raft and appeared to be in distress.

A towboat operator pulled Maccubbin from the water, which was about 47 degrees Wednesday night. He was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he died. Police say Maccubbin was not wearing a life preserver, but did have one on his raft.

Maccubbin's wife, JoAnne, wrote in a message: "Just know please, that he died doing what he truly earnestly loved. And, he was loved by me to the moon and back, each and every day of my life."

This is the second boating fatality in a week and third in three weeks. Eric Pryzkuta, a seventh grade science teacher at Lancaster Middle School, died after the boat he was on crashed and sank at Buffalo Small Boat Harbor Saturday night.

Last month, George Burgasser, a retired federal prosecutor, was found dead in the water near the docks at Smith Boys Marina in North Tonawanda.
