It's an alarming fact: the United States has the highest maternal mortality rate among developed countries. For every 100,000 babies born, about 26 mothers die in child birth. New York is not immune to this problem. In 2010, the state Department of Health implemented the Maternal Mortality Review and Prevention Initiative. But eight years later, New York still ranks 30th in the nation for lowest maternal mortality rate. So lawmakers are hoping to see more included in the final state budget to address this. Joining us from the Capitol to talk more about this is Assemblyman Richard Gottfried, chair of the Assembly's Committee on Health.
