Cohoes leaders hope the third time is the charm in their quest for $10 million in state funds to fill the gaping hole left by last fall's fire on Remsen Street.

Thursday night, the city hosted an open house to collect input from residents on what they would do with the money. They'll then take that input and use it in their final application.

The money would come through Governor Andrew Cuomo's Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The city has applied twice, but has been denied both times.

Mayor Shawn Morse says the city's doing the best it can do to recover, but is running out of resources.

"We want the governor's office to know that you're not going to give $10 million that ain't out there working hard, and you're not giving $10 million that just has ideas," Morse said. "We have shovel ready projects. We're ready to spend that $10 million to transform downtown Cohoes so it can be everything the governor's people want it to be."

Their preliminary idea for Remsen Street includes a mixed-used space with retail shops and apartments. Applications are due June 1.
