Governor Andrew Cuomo is stepping up his efforts to add stricter gun legislation in New York and provide more protections for teachers and school administrators.

Cuomo is introducing the Extreme Risk Protection Order bill, which would prevent individuals determined by the courts to be engaged in conduct that would result in serious harm to themselves or others from purchasing or possessing any type of firearm in New York.

The bill gives teachers and school administrators the ability to prevent possible school shootings by seeking court intervention before an incident could occur.

The new measure is in addition to previously advanced legislation that extends the background check waiting period for gun purchases from 3 days to 10 days.

Regarding the proposed legislation -- Governor Cuomo said in a statement:

"Across the nation, students and communities are taking to the streets to demand change, and we are once again picking up the mantle of leadership from Washington with common sense measures to target the roots of school shootings, and prevent gun violence, tragedies and heartbreak."
