A new warning has been issued from the state Department of Health -- especially to farmers.

A new species of tick has made its way into New York.

The longhorned tick was recently discovered in multiple locations downstate. The species is not native to the U.S.

It is mostly found in Australia, New Zealand and eastern Asia, but it has been spotted in several states along the east coast.

The health department says these ticks have transmitted disease in other parts of the world.

The ticks could pose a threat to livestock.

Farmers are reminded to continue to work with their veterinarians to get their animals checked and to report the state Department of Agriculture if there are any tick-related illnesses in livestock.
