Onondaga County is now stepping in after the owner of Shoppingtown Mall apparently told all tenants they had 30 days to move out of the property.

An email sent to members at Central New York Playhouse earlier this week claims that all of them will be forced out.

County Executive Ryan McMahon said Thursday they might take legal action to allow tenants to stay.

The mall is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and is not able to reopen because it has not followed state protocols.

McMahon said the owner, Moonbeam Capital Investments, is making $25,000 payments to the county, but millions more are owed in back property taxes.

The mall filed for bankruptcy about a year ago. County leaders still hope to redevelop the facility.
