Liverpool High School students may have missed their prom last year, but they will finally be able to dress up and dance at the senior ball this year.

Only social distancing guidelines will change the whole event.

“Because our class is large, we are expecting probably, a little bit lower of a number that it would be normally. Just because of kids not being excited about sitting at a table with smaller groups and not being able to dance like they normally would,” said Liverpool Central School District Superintendent Mark Potter.

State guidelines say students will need to wear masks and dance 6 feet apart.

Liverpool seniors will have their ball on June 4 at Hotel Syracuse.

“Right now — and I say right now because it seems the rules change semi-regularly — we are scheduled to have two events, a 5 p.m.-8 p.m. event and a 9 p.m.-12 a.m. event,” said Potter.

The superintendent said students will probably be separated into groups alphabetically, but that decision is not final. Kids will need to be tested or show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to attend.

“It wouldn’t be as large of a gathering, but we’re trying to present events, as this is really something special as you end your senior year," Potter said. "You’re still having a senior ball. Unfortunately, there isn’t going to be the entire senior group that's assembled together."

The school hasn’t said anything about students bringing dates, but said there will not be a post-senior ball event.

Liverpool juniors are passing on this year's prom and will be putting that money towards their senior ball next year.
