SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The community joined members of the Syracuse Fire Department in welcoming the incoming fire chief Saturday.

Mayor-elect Ben Walsh appointed Lieutenant Michael Monds as the new leader of the department.

The announcement took place at Firefighter's Memorial Park.

Monds is 17-year veteran of the department and serves as lieutenant at Station 10 on East Genesee Street.

He will replace current Chief Paul Linnertz, who is retiring in January.

Monds says he's ready to show his dedication to the city.

"I'm excited. I'm ready to get to work and help support our members to keep the city safe, to keep our firefighters safe and to protect the property in the city. It's just an exciting day overall," said Michael Monds, incoming Syracuse Fire Chief.

Walsh also appointed 20-year veteran Steven Evans as first deputy fire chief.

He has served as the department's district chief since 2010.
