UTICA, N.Y. -- Opening statements were given in the trial of a man accused of murdering a 25-year-old in Rome last summer.

Robert Coffin faces second-degree murder and weapons possession charges in the shooting death of Thomas Shepherd Jr. behind Sammy G's Bar.

Prosecutors outlined the timeline of events, saying Shepherd was with a group of friends during closing time and Coffin was parked out back. One of Shepherd's friends was Coffin's ex-girlfriend, who they say Coffin still loved and Shepherd was trying to look out for.

She allegedly told Coffin she didn't love him anymore and walked away. Shepherd leaned into Coffin's vehicle, and that's when prosecutors said the first shot was fired. They said the incident was caught on surveillance video.

Defense attorneys question what happened before the incident. They will contest what the relationships were like, who had consumed alcohol, and what Coffin's ex-girlfriend actually said.

Testimony resumes Tuesday morning.
