Van Duyn nursing home is responding to new allegations that have come to light -- this time related to the care of a patient who had passed away.

A Syracuse.com report said that a local funeral home had received a decomposed body from Van Duyn last weekend. The funeral director filed a complaint with the state Health Department claiming that they picked up the man's body three days after his death in an unacceptable condition.

They also claimed that other funeral homes had noticed that there were issues with Van Duyn's cooling system in its morgue.

Van Duyn responded Friday saying that they do not operate a morgue.

In a statement, Administrator Dan Detor said, "We take both life and death seriously and have the utmost respect for both.

"Van Duyn does not have, or operate, a morgue. Rather, the facility has one cooler for temporary placement of deceased residents. Recently deceased residents are placed in this cooler between the time of their passing and the time the funeral home accepts their body. Typically, this is for just a few hours. Van Duyn is not equipped to hold deceased patients for lengths of time nor is that a nursing home best practice."

The nursing facility says they are also in the process of addressing other recent complaints about poor conditions and neglect.

They say many noticeable changes have already been made, and more will be announced shortly.
