The high winds across Central New York and the North Country caused a variety of damage throughout the day, including a fatal incident in the town of Theresa on Wednesday.

State police have released the name of a man killed when an amish sugar shack collapsed on cross road near State Route 37. They say the victim was 36-year-old Jonas Swartzentruber.

Two of his family members were also inside when the building came apart. A 15-year-old, who managed to escape, alerted neighbors who helped extricate Swartzentruber. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers are still investigating the incident.

In Syracuse, a hole to burst in the steeple at Saint John the Baptist Church. Winds whipped through, knocking out the wood and other materials in the church.

The sidewalk around the park street has been roped off with caution tape to keep people out of danger. Nobody was hurt by any falling debris.

Winds also knocked down trees, made a roof collapse, and even blew over a small home.

  • 1,342 in Lewis County
  • 1,732 in Madison County
  • 4,026 in Oneida County
  • 2,141 in Onondaga County
  • 3,969 in Oswego County
  • 7,243 in St. Lawrence County

The estimated time for power to return to most counties will be Thursday between 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
