"Dig Safely New York" has broken ground on its new statewide facility in East Syracuse.

Once built, it will be more than 21,000 square feet. It will also include a 5,500 square foot indoor safe digging training area.

Supporters of the project say it's all about making construction safer.

“You can just take out the power in an entire area phone systems, disrupt water lines, infrastructure,” Granger Construction Business Development Manager Don Kowell. “It's a serious thing. And it's not always easy to fix when something happens like that. So an ounce of prevention's worth a pound of cure.”

It's expected to open next Spring.
