Green energy advocates in New York State are keeping a close eye on a new rule out in California, where the state's Energy Commission will be requiring solar systems for new homes.

Solar proponents in Central New York are excited about the new rule.

Fayetteville resident Peter Wirth, who got 18 solar panels for his house in 2012, says the cost after tax rebates was about $6,200. He’s since added three more and says his electric bill every month is about $17, which is the hook-up fee.

“I think it's great that they're taking that leadership role. I would hope that we would see legislative initiatives like that in New York State,” said Wirth.

Meanwhile in a statement, the Home Builders & Remodelers of CNY say about the concept:

"...It is certainly something to consider for the future, however, we need to ensure that the issue is looked at from all angles to make worthwhile decisions... Any advancements in renewable energy and making these technologies more affordable to homeowners and business owners is a good thing."

But, they say, "There are always concerns when something is mandated that adds to the cost of housing, as it takes potential homeowners out of the market."

California's standards will be required starting in 2020.
