A fallen soldier from Cayuga County is being honored by NASCAR on Memorial Day weekend.

Fans were able to check out racer Jimmie Johnson's car at the Lowe's in Sennett on Thursday.

His car bears the name of Staff Sargeant Francis Phillips, who was killed overseas by a roadside bomb back in 2013.

Francis's mother says it means a lot to see his legacy live on, especially around Memorial Day. And she believes her son will be there with Johnson on race day.

"He's going to win, because Frankie was a ranger,” said Cherie Phillips. “Army rangers lead the way, that's their motto. They lead the way. So, Jimmie is going to be leading the way with Frankie next to him."

You can catch Johnson racing in the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday May 27th at 6 p.m.
