CHITTENANGO, N.Y. -- On the streets of Chittenango, Monday was another normal day, but this weekend the streets were filled with thousands of Wizard of Oz enthusiasts. All there to enjoy the three-day long Oz-Stravaganza.

"And then a bench walked off. We were making jokes about it -- following the Yellow-Brick Road. There's no place like home -- somebody else's home. But those things happen," said International L. Frank Baum and All Things Oz Historical Foundation Trustee Mark Baum.

This one-of-a-kind Oz-style bench was stolen. It was priced at $150 with organizers hoping to send it to silent auction.

"We hoped to get much more for it since it was the only one," said Baum

The bench was a donation to the International L. Frank Baum and All Things Oz Historical Foundation.

"It was refinished in gold paint, gold gilding and then we had some material from the Cranston Company, which went out of business in 1999 and its Oz material which is hard to find. And it was reupholstered with that on the top of the bench," said Baum.

It was set outside of the silent auction tent, with workers only feet away.

"Everyone's pens down, getting the sheets out for the silent auction, that's when it happened," said Baum.

In the traffic of thousands of people, someone simply picked up the bench and took it down the Yellow Brick Road.

"This was a little spec of what happened to us over the weekend and it's unfortunate, but it was such a successful weekend. It's hard to be down about anything," said Baum.

And while a "wicked witch" may have swiped the prized possession, leaders are hoping with some heart, courage and smarts, their bench might find its way home too.
