Jury selection was set to begin Monday for the Mount Upton couple accused of killing their son.

Instead, the trial was adjounred until November, the Chenango County District Attorney's office confirms.

Ernest Franklin the second, 36, along with Heather Franklin, 34, are both charged with second-degree murder.

Chenango County Sheriff's deputies say their 16-year-old son, Jeffrey, was found dead after a house fire at his parents' Mount Upton home on State Highway 8 back in 2017.

An autopsy revealed that Jeffrey was killed prior to the fire breaking out. The couple had adopted Jeffrey, who was handicapped, a few years before his death.

Investigators had originally said they believe the fire was set to cover up Jeffrey's murder.

Both Ernest Franklin and Heather Franklin pleaded not guilty to the charges last year.

The trial was adjourned due to issues that came up during a pre-trial conference Monday morning, the DA's office said.

The trial is now tentatively scheduled to begin on November 7.
