In a crowded field, voters are going to have to wait even longer to see who officially won the 23rd Congressional District primary. Voters could choose between five candidates.

26 votes separate Max Della Pia and Tracy Mitrano. That is the unofficial numbers. But Della Pia isn’t in the clear yet, as about 177 of 414 absentee ballots have been counted.

Mitrano led closely for most of the night, but it was Della Pia who came out on top in the 11th hour. There is the possibility of a recount. That would have to be requested by either candidate. But for now, it’s in the hands of the board of elections.

“District-wide ... the race is too close to call, and so the next thing is to count the absentee ballots and any affidavit ballots that came in, and that will be done on Monday," said Chemung County Board of Elections Commissioner Cynthia Emmer.

The official results won’t be in for several weeks. The winner will challenge Congressman Tom Reed in November.
