ROME, N.Y. — A transformational project in downtown Rome is not only expected to make improvements to the city, but create new opportunities as well, such as plans for expanding an advanced manufacturing facility.

"That's going to create 45 new jobs I believe, right in that downtown area," said Rome Mayor Jacqueline Izzo.

They also plan to enhance the city's green space by City Hall.

"We're going to do an ice skating rink out there so we can do ice skating in the wintertime," Izzo said. "That will be a portable rink. And then of course, we've been holding events there now."

Gov. Cuomo announced the state's support for the city's $10 million downtown revitalization plan on Monday.

"We were very lucky that it was exactly what we wanted and really close to the funding amounts that we had submitted,” said Izzo.

It's a lot of work that will be done in not a lot of time. Mayor Izzo said it should all be complete in 24 months.

"We were just waiting for the funding announcements to be completed so we could get started," she said.

There have already been some changes at The Capitol Theatre, and more will be coming as it enters Phase Two with help from this funding.

"That includes things like the restoration of the original Marquee and vertical sign that was taken down as well as internal restorations as far as replacing the carpeting, repairing seats," said The Capitol Theatre's Executive Director Art Pierce.

Izzo said the upgrades play a big role in their transformative effort, but believes every project is essential to their vision.

"For us, it's all the pieces of a puzzle that need to come together at one time," she said.
