BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. -- A few dozen teachers and community members are rolling up their sleeves to build a playground at Van Buren Elementary in Baldwinsville.

Volunteers are installing new slides, swings, and other equipment to replace the school's outdated play area.

Members of the Parent Teachers Association sent out flyers and attained some sponsors, donations, and some extra hands.

Most of the $160,000 project was covered by a $125,000 state grant.

Using a community labor effort, the school was able to save roughly $35,000.

"Anything that they fundraised, went into some of the equipment we had because it wasn't just come help. Bring your shovels, bring your wheel barrows, bring your rakes, drill bits, everything that they need for the build is provided from the community itself," said Van Buren Elementary School Principal Danielle Nahorney.

Crews hope to be finished with the playground by Sunday.

It's the first of three playgrounds in the Baldwinsville district being replaced this summer.
