Despite many fireworks displays being canceled this year, that didn't stop people from lighting up the skies of Syracuse on Saturday night.

Illegal fireworks could be seen all across the city, coming from parks and neighborhood streets. Syracuse Police say they've seen the use of illegal fireworks increase a 1,000 percent from last year and have upped patrols in response. They also say they aren’t trying to stop the fun, but they need to keep people safe.

"Trying to get information out there that not only are fireworks are illegal, because they are dangerous and as much as we don’t think it’s a big problem we have numerous complaints of injuries, houses being burnt down," Syracuse Public Information Officer Matthew Malinowski says.

There was just one official fireworks show in the Central New York area Saturday night. It was held at the LaFayette Apple Festival grounds, but only 500 vehicles were allowed to enter.

The city of Oswego plans to celebrate with fireworks Sunday night over the Railroad Pedestrian Bridge at 9:45 p.m.
