Donning black rubber gloves and a purple face mask has become the new normal for Ben Lainhart.

He's been the head of Your Home Public Library in Johnson City for the past three years.

In a time when COVID-19 regulations are heavily impacting the way libraries are run, Lainhart credits his patrons and staff for staying positive.

"They're all excited to still come in every day, so things are changing, but they're always changing and we'll figure it out and make sure we're offering whatever we can," said Ben Lainhart, Your Home Public Library Director.

And right now, those options are limited.

But the good news, all materials the library offers can still be checked out.

"When the books come in, we take them out of the book drop. Right now, they can only be left in the book drop. So we take them out, quarantine them for seven days, that's why we date everything. After that, they'll be sanitized," said Lainhart.

These new duties are a bit different for Lainhart, but he's just happy the library can still be open.

And with more people stuck at home, they're just as busy if not busier than they were before the pandemic.

"The curbside's been busy. It's not the same services we can offer, but at least it's something. As you can see, these are a couple of days of stuff that's returned, so at least we're still able to offer that," said Lainhart.

And just like before the pandemic, it's not only about the books.

Visitors relied heavily on the computers but can actually still do drive-by printing and scanning.

"They're usually packed all day long and just as popular, if not more popular, than books and DVD's," said Lainhart.

In the meantime, libraries will continue finding ways to adapt, and Lainhart is thrilled to be a part of it.
